The LLMs4EU project is dedicated to preserving and promoting Europe’s rich linguistic and cultural diversity in the digital age, through cooperation between economic and academic actors in the field of generative AI.

Key objectives of the project include:

  • Establishing a one-stop shop for language data to generate value for developers of Large Language Models (LLMs) and ensure fair benefit-sharing with data owners.
  • Stimulating the ecosystem to develop language models tailored to specific languages, sectors, and use cases, while reducing barriers to entry for new users and developers.
  • Overcoming technical and operational hurdles to enable the creation of LLMs for all official EU languages, as well as for low-resource regional languages across member countries.
  • Designing and launching the ALT-EDIC Virtual Evaluation Centre, a cutting-edge platform for the transparent evaluation and benchmarking of LLMs.
  • Ensuring alignment with EU data and AI regulations, promoting trustworthy, fair, and ethical AI practices.

The project is led by ALT-EDIC (Alliance for Language Technologies – European Digital Infrastructure Consortium) and carried out by a broad consortium of leading research centers and companies specializing in language data management, LLMs and language technologies. The partnership also includes representatives from five key sectors: tourism, telecommunications, science, public services, and energy.

ILSP is a core partner in LLMs4EU, actively contributing to all major project activities. ILSP leads the work package responsible for the collection and processing of language data and the development of the project’s data infrastructure – critical components that underpin the project’s success.
