abstract = {Anglicisms, a type of lexical borrowing, occur when a language incorporates English lexical items into its vocabulary, either verbatim or transliterated. Pseudo-Anglicisms are also notable; these appear English due to their form but are not genuinely English. This paper examines the inclusion and treatment of Anglicisms and pseudo-Anglicisms in Modern Greek dictionaries, focusing on nouns that end in -ing, a suffix typical of English morphology. The methodology involves a macrostructural comparison of five Greek dictionaries to assess their inclusiveness in addressing this phenomenon. The microstructural analysis investigates the presence of Greek equivalents within the dictionaries. Findings are cross-checked against a corpus to determine which alternatives Greek native speakers are more familiar with. Additionally, the research explores elements such as the domains, and styles of the identified lexical items to reveal trends in their coinage and usage.},

abstract = {To date, there exist almost no culturally-specific evaluation benchmarks for large language models (LLMs) that cover a large number of languages and cultures. In this paper, we present Global PIQA, a participatory commonsense reasoning benchmark for over 100 languages, constructed by hand by 335 researchers from 65 countries around the world. The 116 language varieties in Global PIQA cover five continents, 14 language families, and 23 writing systems. In the non-parallel split of Global PIQA, over 50% of examples reference local foods, customs, traditions, or other culturally-specific elements. We find that state-of-the-art LLMs perform well on Global PIQA in aggregate, but they exhibit weaker performance in lower-resource languages (up to a 37% accuracy gap, despite random chance at 50%). Open models generally perform worse than proprietary models. Global PIQA highlights that in many languages and cultures, everyday knowledge remains an area for improvement, alongside more widely-discussed capabilities such as
complex reasoning and expert knowledge. Beyond its uses for LLM evaluation, we hope that Global PIQA provides a glimpse into the wide diversity of cultures in which human language is embedded.},

abstract = {Cultural heritage comprises not merely visual but multisensory experiences that individuals and communities share and which are related to specific sites and locations. Olfactory memories in particular are tightly connected to people, places and the physical 3D space and they are deeply ingrained in our emotion; they have a profound ability to connect people and communities through deeply shared experiences. The emerging field of Olfactory Cultural Heritage focuses on ways to capture, present and share olfactory experiences that are of value to a community. In this chapter, we suggest that digital maps can be employed to this end, functioning as a highly interactive medium. This requires that one goes beyond state of the art use of maps for documenting, delimiting and connecting heritage sites to their physical contexts, to employing maps as a communication tool; we identify the interdisciplinary challenges involved in large-scale collection, cartographic representation and visualisation of olfactory memories and propose research directions that require joint efforts from a number of disciplines including Cartography, Language Science and Engineering, and Cognitive Science.},

abstract = {This study investigates the lexicographic treatment of the term humor across a range of historical and contemporary dictionaries of Modern Greek, focusing on differences in definition, examples of use, as well as other elements of the dictionaries’ microstructure. The analysis spans general-purpose dictionaries, specialized linguistic works, and encyclopedic references, covering various linguistic traditions and time periods. By comparing dictionary entries, this study explores how humor has been conceptualized in relation to its psychological and cultural dimensions, as well as how these interpretations have evolved over time. Additionally, the study evaluates the extent to which dictionary definitions reflect broader societal attitudes toward humor. Special attention is given to the presence of illustrative examples, label classifications, and other microstructural information, assessing their contribution to user understanding.
By tracing changes in the treatment of humor, this study sheds light on broader trends in lexicography, such as the impact of cultural shifts, ideological influences, and evolving methodologies in dictionary-making. The findings highlight variations in definitional clarity, consistency, and depth, revealing how lexicographers negotiate meaning in response to linguistic and societal developments. Furthermore, the study considers the implications of these findings for modern lexicographic practice. Ultimately, this research contributes to discussions on the dynamic nature of word meaning and the interplay between lexicography and cultural perceptions of humor, offering insights into the evolving relationship between dictionaries and the societies they serve.},

abstract = {This paper introduces the concept of evolving actor–network ontologies (EANO) as a new paradigm for cultural digital twins. Building on actor–network theory, EANO reframes ontologies from static representations into reflexive, dynamic structures in which semantic interpretations are continuously negotiated among heterogeneous actors. We propose a five-layer architecture that operationalizes this principle, embedding reflexivity, actor salience, and systemic parameters such as resistance and volatility directly into the ontological model. To illustrate this approach, we present minimal simulations that demonstrate how different actor constellations and systemic conditions lead to distinct patterns of semantic evolution, ranging from expert erosion to contested equilibria and balanced coexistence. Rather than serving as predictive models, these simulations exemplify how EANO captures semantic plurality and contestation within a transparent and interpretable framework. The contribution of this work is thus twofold: it provides a conceptual foundation for evolving ontologies in digital heritage and a lightweight demonstration of how such models can be instantiated and explored computationally.},

abstract = {Sign language recognition (SLR) from videos constitutes a captivating problem in gesture recognition, requiring the interpretation of hand movements, facial expressions, and body postures. The complexity of sign formation, signing variability among signers, and the technical hurdles of visual detection and tracking render SLR a challenging task. At the same time, the scarcity of large-scale SLR datasets, which are critical for developing robust data-intensive deep-learning SLR models, exacerbates these issues. In this article, we introduce a multi-signer video corpus of Greek Sign Language (GSL), which is the largest GSL database to date, serving as a valuable resource for SLR research. This corpus comprises an extensive RGB+D video collection that conveys rich lexical content in a multi-modal fashion, encompassing three subsets: (i) isolated signs; (ii) continuous signing; and (iii) continuous alphabet fingerspelling of words. Moreover, we introduce a comprehensive experimental setup that paves the way for more accurate and robust SLR solutions. In particular, except for the multi-signer (MS) and signer-independent (SI) settings, we employ a signer-adapted (SA) experimental paradigm, facilitating a comprehensive evaluation of system performance across various scenarios. Further, we provide three baseline SLR systems for isolated signs, continuous signing, and continuous fingerspelling. These systems leverage cutting-edge methods in deep learning and sequence modeling to capture the intricate temporal dynamics inherent in sign gestures. The models are evaluated on the three corpus subsets, setting their state-of-the-art recognition benchmark. The SL-ReDu GSL corpus, including its recommended experimental frameworks, is publicly available at https://sl-redu.e-ce.uth.gr/corpus.},

abstract = {Artificial intelligence (AI) is transforming education by introducing innovative tools and approaches to enhance teaching and learning. Chatbots like Dawebot and TA-bot serve as intelligent student assistants, providing interactive quizzes, immediate feedback, and personalized support. AI-based systems like Rexy and Kwame offer personalized learning experiences, adapting to individual student needs and enhancing self-regulated learning. Chatbots and AI-based systems can address educational challenges in resource-constrained settings, providing scalable and cost-effective learning solutions. More specifically, Generative AI technologies, like the Large Language Model-based ChatGPT, with their advanced language capabilities, promise enriched and interactive real-time learning through natural conversation. These advancements demonstrate the potential of AI to revolutionize education, making it more personalized, accessible, and effective for all learners. Some typical ways in which this potential is demonstrated is the ability to quickly answer questions, provide explanations according to preset criteria, and suggest additional teaching and learning resources.
The Conversational AI assistant for teaching and learning (AI4EDU) project aims to improve school education by exploring and implementing new approaches, technologies, and applications of AI in Education. It seeks to create new, innovative, adaptable, personalized, engaging, and effective ways of teaching and learning, in view of the growing challenges brought on by the digital transformation of education. This paper describes the design and development of a student-facing AI platform to enhance, personalize, and facilitate learning, empower teachers, and support teaching and assessment objectives, increase knowledge and understanding of AI among students and teachers to understand how AI applications work, their potential, and their limitations. A key feature of this endeavor is the incorporation of Large Language Models (LLMs) like ChatGPT. Incorporating LLMs into educational environments poses challenges like restricted personalization, the risk of misinformation, and excessive dependence on technology. In order to combine LLMs with textbooks and other educational resources currently used in schools, AI4EDU tackles these issues by employing Retrieval Augmented Generation (RAG) and a conversational AI model for interacting with students and teachers through natural language understanding. Key aspects include ethical considerations, content reliability, and a balance between AI assistance and human interaction. The project seeks to transform education by delivering personalized, adaptive, and captivating learning experiences for both students and teachers.
To combine all these into a flexible, personalized, engaging, and effective educational platform, AI4EDU develops two different tools that accommodate the needs of both students and teachers. These tools are Study Buddy, a conversational AI assistant to help students with a wide range of learning activities, and Teacher Mate, a dashboard and chatbot that also incorporates AI-powered technologies and assists teachers in organizing the teaching process, preparing materials and tests, evaluating students, tracking their progress, and more. Both tools incorporate educational resources from four EU countries (Cyprus, Greece, Ireland, Sweden) and are offered in three European languages (Greek, Irish, Swedish).},

abstract = {The COVID-19 pandemic, a period of great turmoil, was coupled with the emergence of an “infodemic”, a state when the public was bombarded with vast amounts of unverified information from dubious sources that led to a chaotic information landscape. The excessive flow of messages to citizens, combined with the justified fear and uncertainty imposed by the unknown virus, cast a shadow on the credibility of even well-intentioned sources and affected the emotional state of the public. Several studies highlighted the mental toll this environment took on citizens by analyzing their discourse on online social networks (OSNs). In this study, we focus on the activity of prominent pharmaceutical companies on Twitter, currently known as X, as well as the public’s response during the COVID-19 pandemic. Communication between companies and users is examined and compared in two discrete channels, the COVID-19 and the non-COVID-19 channel, based on the content of the posts circulated in them in the period between March 2020 and September 2022, while the emotional profile of the content is outlined through a state-of-the-art emotion analysis model. Our findings indicate significantly increased activity in the COVID-19 channel compared to the non-COVID-19 channel while the predominant emotion in both channels is joy. However, the COVID-19 channel exhibited an upward trend in the circulation of fear by the public. The quotes and replies produced by the users, with a stark presence of negative charge and diffusion indicators, reveal the public’s preference for promoting tweets conveying an emotional charge, such as fear, surprise, and joy. The findings of this research study can inform the development of communication strategies based on emotion-aware messages in future crises.},
