abstract = {In this paper, the process of designing an annotated Greek Corpus of Aphasic Discourse (GREECAD) is presented. Given that resources of this kind are quite limited, a major aim of the GREECAD was to provide a set of specifications which could serve as a methodological basis for the development of other relevant corpora, and, therefore, to contribute to the future research in this area. The GREECAD was developed with the following requirements: a) to include a rather homogeneous sample of Greek as spoken by individuals with aphasia; b) to document speech samples with rich metadata, which include demographic information, as well as detailed information on the patients’ medical record and neuropsychological evaluation; c) to provide annotated speech samples, which encode information at the micro-linguistic (words, POS, grammatical errors, clause types, etc.) and discourse level (narrative structure elements, main events, evaluation devices, etc.). In terms of the design of the GREECAD, the basic requirements regarding data collection, metadata, transcription, and annotation procedures were set. The discourse samples were transcribed and annotated with the ELAN tool. To ensure accurate and consistent annotation, a Transcription and Annotation Guide was compiled, which includes detailed guidelines regarding all aspects of the transcription and annotation procedure.},

abstract = {Studies on mildly impaired speakers with aphasia conducted over the past 30 years have emphasized the clinical importance of the study of discourse production (Doyle et al. 1998, Armstrong 2000, Olness & Ulatowska 2002, Wright et al. 2005, Olness et al. 2010, Stark 2010). Since people with aphasia experience particular difficulties in their everyday communication, the study of their abilities at the discourse level is a natural and objective method for assessing the communicative effectiveness of these individuals in their everyday life. Moreover, the study of discourse production can contribute to a more accurate identification of the communication impairments of speakers with aphasia, as well as to the evaluation of their response to treatment. Among the various discourse types, narrative discourse has attracted more attention in aphasia research, mainly because the abstract narrative schema provides an objective framework for the analysis of speakers’ spoken and written productions and their comparison to healthy controls. Different assessment tools including a variety of measures and elicitation tasks for narrative discourse production have been applied in aphasia research. This paper presents a comprehensive battery for the elicitation and evaluation of narrative discourse in Greek, which can serve s a valid and reliable assessment tool of narrative and communication abilities of speakers with aphasia, but also as a tool for planning effective treatment.},

Effects of practice on the relation of reading to color naming and interference Proceedings Article

abstract = {Purpose: We examined the effects of practice on color naming of neutral and interfering stimuli. Word reading is correlated with color naming and with Stroop interference, in which color words are printed in a different color ink which must be named. It is often assumed that interference arises from lack of automaticity of color naming and might decrease with naming practice. Method: 58 adults and 66 children (Grades 4-5) formed 4 groups and practiced for 3 days on 192 stimuli (144 for children) each day. The “interference” group practiced color naming with incongruent color words; the “color” group practiced color naming with strings of Xs; the “word” group practiced reading aloud color words; the “control” group did not practice. The days before and after practice each participant read color words and named colors of neutral stimuli and incongruent color words. Reading and inhibition tests were also included. Results: Interference practice led to decreased interference for both
adults and children. Color practice did not reduce color naming time
and did not affect interference. Word practice reduced children’s (but not adults’) interference. Interference changes could not be attributed to reduced impulsivity or improved cognitive control. Conclusions: Findings are inconsistent with lack of color naming practice being a major cause of interference. Rather, word reading seems to be the limiting factor, because practice at an age when reading is not yet fully fluent leads to reduced interference. Studies of interference help us understand the development of word reading efficiency and associated cognitive control.},

abstract = {"Long Lasting Memories (LLM) is a European project that aims to provide a unified solution for mental and physical health to elderly individuals with (or at risk for) cognitive impairment through adaptive cognitive and physical exercises in the context of game environments:
(a) Cognitive Training is performed through the Brain Fitness Program, a scientifically-based cognitive intervention program designed to speed up auditory processing, improve working memory, improve the accuracy and the speed with which the brain processes speech information and reengage the neuromodulatory systems that gate learning and memory. To drive brain plasticity, the program strongly engages the brain with demanding exercises and an adaptive and reward-based daily training schedule. Cognitive exercises provided by it are divided into a number of interrelated categories, that, in aggregate, span the acoustic organization of speech.
(b) Physical Training is performed through FitForAll, a modular, fully parameterized and easily accessible game platform that helps elderly people to exercise and maintain their physical status and well being through an innovative, low-cost ICT platform, such as Nintendo Wii© peripheral devices. It integrates through its environment a set of games and exercise routines, with which seniors interact dynamically. Physical interaction between seniors and games combine both training and entertainment, thus engaging users to successfully fulfill their targets. FitForAll incorporates predefined training routines, which are designed taking into consideration national guidelines regarding physical exercise in the Third Age, including exercise types such as balance, aerobic endurance, strength and flexibility.
