Markantonatou Stella
Stella Markantonatou holds the following degrees: MA in Chemical Engineering (NTUA 1983), BA in Linguistics (NKUA 1988) and PhD in Linguistics (University of Essex 1992). She is a Research Director at the Institute for Language and Speech Processing/ATHENA RC and Collaborating Senior Researcher at the Archimedes Unit/ATHENA RC. She has worked on twenty R&D projects in the United Kingdom and in Greece; of them she has coordinated eight and had the scientific responsibility of the remaining ones. Since 2010 he has been developing IDION, which is a web-based lexicographical database for documenting multiword expressions of Modern Greek and other languages for NLP purposes.
She has published about 110 papers in national and international refereed journals and conferences, and she has edited 5 volumes for international and Greek publishers. She has taught graduate and postgraduate courses on Natural Language Processing and Digital Humanities in the United Kingdom, Cyprus and Greece. She is a member of the TE21 terminological committee of the Technical Chamber of Greece and of the Management Committee of the postgraduate course “Language Technology” that is coorganised by the NKUA and ATHENA RC. She has been a member of the Scientific Council of the National Documentation Center of Greece and of the SIGLEX Standing Committee for Multiword Expressions. Her research interests include the study and lexicographical documentation of Multiword Expressions for NLP purposes, (mainly cultural) knowledge modelling with the use of ontologies and thesauri, and the development of state-of-the-art resources for boosting NLP on less resourced and endangered language varieties, including dialects of Modern Greek and special types of discourse, e.g., offensive speech.
