Katerina Pastra is a Research Fellow on Language Technology and Multimedia. She is the coordinator and the ILSP principal investigator of the research project POETICON (FP7-ICT), and the principal investigator of the Latsis Studies 2009 grant on “Image-Language Dialectics in Greek Caricatures”. She holds a BA in Greek Literature and Linguistics (University of Athens), an MSc in Machine Translation (UMIST, UK) and a PhD in Artificial Intelligence (University of Sheffield, U.K.) in which she explored the integration of vision and language within artificial agents engaged in everyday interaction.  She has worked on information extraction and automatic text-based image/audiovisual indexing and retrieval within semantics-based indexing and retrieval projects (CONCERTO/IST, SOCIS/EPSRC, REVEAL THIS/IST). She has lectured on Human-Computer/Human-Robot Interaction and the use of cognitive and psychological methods in software engineering (University of Sheffield) and has organized international workshops on multimedia processing. She is the author of a number of publications on the above topics, one of which has won a distinction by the British Computer Society.

Miscellaneous

***  Easy steps for recycling: I am interested in recycling practices and ways of introducing them in our everyday life. I have compiled some information on things that one could do in one’s working/home environment to actively engage into recycling; links in the document are localized for Greece (we have taken such steps in ILSP), but similar services are available in other countries too.

*** Video editing and movie creation: Related to my research interests, video editing and movie creation is an activity that I have taken up myself. My first attempt was the creation of the publicly available videos explaining and demonstrating the research output of the FP6 project REVEAL THIS (can be accessed following the link above). The mobile-application video incorporates video editing of a video file showing the mobile in use (filmed by a colleague) while the other two, the web-application video and the project-presentation video have been created from scratch and heavily involve screencast technology.
